All to play for: playing, learning -- and teaching young children?

Working with young children today demands attention to aspects including teaching, curriculum, assessment, child development and learning, not to mention the statutory demands of the EYFS and Ofsted's latest emphasis. In this complex picture the central importance of play for young children can be squeezed out, leaving adults uncertain of where play fits in, why it matters, and what it has to do with adults anyway. Let's stop, refresh the picture and ensure children experience their right to play, with all the rich benefits it brings.

Nancy Stewart is a writer, consultant and trainer with nationally recognised expertise in early years development and learning. She has wide experience across early years sectors in schools, nurseries, local authority advisory service, and National Strategies where she was Senior Early Years Adviser and wrote guidance materials including ‘Learning, Playing and Interacting’. She has worked to implement national programmes and advised on curriculum and assessment in the EYFS review. Early communication and language for thinking is one area of her interest and expertise, along with children’s development as self-regulated learners and the central place of play, as well as playful teaching and learning. Nancy co-authored Development Matters with Helen Moylett, and wrote How children learn - The characteristics of effective early learning, among other publications. She currently serves as Chair of TACTYC, the Association for Professional Development in Early Years.
