This 1-day course is specifically for social work practitioners responsible for assessing the needs of autistic adults.
It is delivered by colleagues from Avon & Wiltshire Partnership, with high level of expertise in supporting adults with autism.
It will include a focus on:
Issues in assessment:
Opportunity to reflect on previous assessments with autistic adults
Consider how someone with autism might be eligible (unmet) needs in each outcome area of Care Act 2014
Why some ‘able’ adults get overlooked for support
Why a good assessment is essential for autistic adults – mental health co-morbidities- anxiety/low mood/suicidal risks
Reasons why assessment may be difficult eg apparent lack of engagement, communication of needs
Impact on families and carers,
How to work with parents
Autism and other social care law. Autism Act, Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act and Equality Act
Assessment:
Preparing for assessment, gathering information, time requirement
Using principles of safety, clarity, precision, empathy, and low arousal
How to structure visits, assessments and reviews for autistic adults
How to build rapport and develop trust
How to alter the way you communicate
Assessing sensory needs within context of the Care Act
Service provision:
Working with care providers and setting up placements for autistic adults
What does a good service look like?
Critically evaluating providers including specialist provision
Low level long term support methods

YOU WILL NEED TO ATTEND A RAISING SAFEGUARDING CONCERNS COURSE BEFORE ATTENDING THIS TRAINING. Managers of agencies that provide services for adults at risk must ensure they lead a "safe service", with competent staff and an organisational culture that safeguards adults. This 1-day workshop will help delegates to understand and be accountable for the key factors in managing and preventing organisational abuse in the services they lead and/or review. Working with Asylum Seekers and Refugees: 4 half day training sessions suitable for any profession.
Following on from the previous course, we have condensed the previous five sessions into four, and are running them at a closer intervals which we hope you will find more helpful. You are also able to choose which sessions best meet your needs, and so as a result each course is set up separately on the system. We would recommend that in order for you to get the most benefit, that you attend all four sessions, but do realise that this isn't always possible.

Are you caring for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people and want to follow best practice?
Are you concerned that your clients are getting lost in the maze of the UK asylum system?

About the Course:
1. The Refugee Journey: Consider patterns of global migrationto understand why refugees and asylum seekers might arrive in South Gloucestershire, and what they may have experienced on their journeys.
2. The U.K Asylum System: Examine how the system works (or doesn’t work) and the entitlements of refugees and asylum seekers at different stages of the process.
3. Unaccompanied Children: Understand why and how young people travel to the UK alone and consider the specific needs of this vulnerable group.
Please note: All participants for this session must have attended session 2, The UK Asylum System.
4. Intercultural Awareness: Explore how it feels to operate outside of your own culture, and to lose all that is familiar to you. Look at some fundamental ways in which cultures differ from each other, which may give insights into intercultural misunderstandings.
This highly interactive training is facilitated by Nese Davidson-Birch & Alison Clarkson Webb from Tamarisk Training, using a variety of activities including simulations, games, discussions, case studies.
Tamarisk Training design and facilitate bespoke training events to promote intercultural awareness and understanding of issues facing asylum seekers and refugees.
