Code: SGC/18/1187 EYFS Assessment Network 2018/2019 (SCHOOLS ONLY)(CF)

This network is suitable for all EYFS leaders, Reception teachers and teaching assistants making assessments of children’s learning and using them to develop quality of provision. It may also be of interest to assessment co-ordinators, deputy heads and head teachers who are looking to develop their understanding of assessment in early years.

This network will focus on developing your skills in assessment, required by the statutory assessment and moderation of standards process, in order to plan teaching and learning opportunities and support your practice in school. The network will provide opportunities to reflect on good practice through group work and discussions; engage in inter-school agreement trialling; and receive ongoing updates and news about assessment policy development.

The EYFSP 2018 handbook (p13) states that:
when practitioners are evaluating the effectiveness of their assessment processes they should consider:
child development….;
planning….;
the environment….;
the need for detailed understanding of the EYFS framework for assessment….;
high quality adult interaction….;
the organisational aspects of provision, resources, curriculum and people.
Successful implementation of these aspects of pedagogy and provision will enable practitioners to make an accurate, reliable and consistent assessment of children’s learning. This will inform planning for year 1.”

Code: SGC/18/707 Launch Pad Session 2: Dedicated Induction, Training and Support Group for Connected Carers including Special Guardians

What is it? This is a new dedicated Induction, Training and Support Group for Connected Carers, Including Special Guardians Why are we running it? We recognise that your situation is very different to that of main stream foster carers. The new role that you find yourself in now, is often not a pathway you may have planned on taking. Unlike foster carers, you are thrown in at the deep end without having had a course to prepare you for what lies ahead, and how ‘The System’ works. This course aims to do that as well as recognise the particular difficulties that you as ‘Kinship Carers’, whatever your role, face. How will it run? There will be six sessions, each lasting approximately 2-2.5 hours, which will take place over the course of a year. It is hoped that you will attend all six, but as new carers arrive, they can join the programme at any stage. The sessions will be led in the main by Social workers from our team. There will be light refreshment of tea and coffee provided at each session, but it would be rather nice if we could take it in turns to bring and share some food. The first session will be catered for, but we will discuss how this works for future sessions at the end of our first meeting. This session will focus on Managing Contact

Code: SGC/18/194 Mental Capacity Act (MCA) Essentials for Care Workers

This assessed training course provides Care Workers with the essential skills and knowledge to apply and comply with the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 when carrying out their role. The MCA applies to every health and social care worker who is involved in the care, treatment or support of people who are unable to make all or some decisions themselves. Care Quality Commission Inspectors are increasingly asking care workers to explain their responsibilities under the MCA.

The MCA provides legal protection from liability for carrying out care and treatment of people who lack capacity to consent, provided that care workers: Understand the principles of the MCA
Have carried out a capacity assessment and reasonably believe that the person lacks capacity
Reasonably believe the action they have taken is in the best interests of the person.

How the training course works:
Attend a workshop
Submit brief evidence of how you have applied your learning in the workplace
Receive feedback on your work which is shared with your employer

Once you have achieved the required standard for compliance and good practice in line with the MCA code of practice you will be awarded a Mental Capacity Essentials Training Certificate.

The standard charge for this course is £40. Please refer to our Course Charges on the Home page for information on discounts and exemptions.
