Code: SGC/25/0144 Systemic Practice - Key Skills and Techniques

This 3-day practical, practice focused workshop will introduce attendees to key systemic practice ideas, skills and techniques which we can all use in our day-to-day work with children and families. Each day will provide attendees with some systemic theory with practical examples of how these ideas can then be used with children, young adults and families.

This course will be an opportunity to meet practitioners from different parts of the service, learning together and trying and experimenting with new ideas and approaches.

Day 1 – What goes on in families?
Day 2 – How we work with families?
Day 3 – Working with risks and networks

Who is this course for? This course is open to all staff who work either with or supervise practitioners who work directly with children, young adults or families. No previous experience of systemic practice ideas or theories is required – but you are of course most welcome if you have accessed systemic training in the past.

This course sits alongside and compliments the STAR programme and is a key component of our practice model.

Please have a digital copy (or print if you prefer) of the course WORKBOOK to bring along to the session. (All other resources are available for digital download and storage via the same link should you wish to use them during or after the event)

Also, please be aware that some of the resources contain sensitive content, that you may find upsetting. This training aims to educate and raise awareness, but it can evoke emotional responses, particularly for individuals with personal connections to child or adult bereavements, or the incidents themselves.

If you find the content overwhelming, we encourage you to prioritise your well-being. Take breaks, reflect on your boundaries, and seek support from trusted individuals or professionals as needed. For assistance during or after the training, please reach out to the trainer or your line manager in the first instance, contact Interchange the staff counselling service, or you can also access Thrive.

We are committed to creating an inclusive learning environment and promoting empathy and respect for all.

The training is organised by South Gloucestershire Safeguarding Children Partnership and is targeted at all staff from all agencies who are working directly with children, or adults who are parents. Effective child protection depends not only on reliable and accepted procedures for all staff involved with children, but also on their skills, knowledge and judgement and the ability to work together co-operatively. Staff with lead roles in child protection require specialised training in order to carry out their work with abused children and families. Please note it is recommended to leave a minimum of 3 months between attending Introduction to Child Protection and Advanced Child Protection.

Please DO NOT book onto the Advanced Child Protection course, unless you have attended the Introduction to Child Protection course. The knowledge needed for this course is dependent on you having attended the previous session. Thank you.

Code: SGC/25/0202 Tips For Trauma Informed Practice

This inspiring session is delivered by 'Barnardo's Lived Experience Consultancy' and is open to staff in Childrens Social Care and Preventative Services.

The young people delivering this session will be using their lived experience to inspire us to be more trauma aware. They have known each other and the staff at Barnardo's over a number of years and so fully trust one another. This session is unique.

A previous attendee shared that it was probably the best Trauma Informed (TI) training that they had attended. They also loved the way they were asked to reflect on what they would do differently in their practice, in response to the top 7 tips to work in a TI way.

They left the session feeling confident that a lot of what they did was TI, but with a greater awareness and understanding of what people suffering from trauma go through/think about the professionals working with them as well.

This training is for everyone in social care; social work assistants, social workers, personal assistants, team managers, service managers.

Hearing from people with lived experience is so powerful, as we know. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from the experts and be given the time and space to reflect on what changes you could make to your current practice to be the best TI practitioner that you can be.
