This one day course gives practitioners who are working with parents and their families practical appraoches, tools and resources to use directly with them. It will also give practitioners an insight into how parents are coping and feeling and it will explore effective ways to support them.

Effective child protection depends not only on reliable and accepted procedures for all staff involved with children, but also on their skills, knowledge and judgement and the ability to work together co-operatively. Staff with lead roles in child protection require specialised training in order to carry out their work with abused children and families. Please note it is recommended to leave a minimum of 3 months between attending Introduction to Child Protection and Advanced Child Protection.

Please DO NOT book onto the Advanced Child Protection course, unless you have attended the Introduction to Child Protection course. The knowledge needed for this course is dependent on you having attended the previous session. Thank you.

This course is delivered on behalf of the South Gloucestershire Safeguarding Children's Partnership.

Participants should be only those who have already completed the Introduction to Child Protection and Advanced-level of Child Protection training within statutory or setting-related timescales, and who now need to maintain this level of training.

Participants will be expected to have a good working knowledge of safeguarding with experience of statutory and local child protection responsibilities and procedures.

Effective child protection depends not only on reliable and accepted procedures for all staff involved with children, but also on their skills, knowledge and judgment and the ability to work together co-operatively.

Staff with lead roles in child protection require specialised training in order to carry out their work with abused children and families.

The learning outcomes for this training are designed to ensure that all participants receive updates in the latest child protection legislation, statutory guidance, local policies, procedures and professional requirements.

Code: SGC/24/0059 Trauma Awareness and Recovery - Face to Face

This is an face to face course, if you prefer online training please have a look at our other sessions in 2023.

Our trauma-informed partner Dignifi will be delivering this training.The People Dept is under-going a radical and long-lasting transformation to become trauma informed and responsive to both the people who work for us, and those in South Glos who are served by us.
The morning session on Trauma Awareness course will cover:

  • Different types of trauma and how they impact on emotional regulation and ability to manage stress.
  • How to develop awareness of trauma and its impacts upon a person’s perceptions, thinking and behaviour.
  • Trauma and the body Fight, Flight and Freeze responses and how to manage activations.
  • Trauma and links to addiction.

In the afternoon session the course will explore strategies for Trauma Recovery including;
  • Supporting staff to understand their own engagement style and reflect on how to adapt to a trauma responsive approach.
  • Feel equipped to assess and intervene if someone is displaying symptoms of trauma.
  • Are equipped to manage difficult situations using trauma responsive strategies.
  • Are supported to manage the issues they face at work and balance this with their own self-care needs

The content of the training covers trauma and adversity and can be triggering. If you think this content might trigger you ahead of the day, please let us know at Trauma-informed@southglos.gov.uk and/or talk to your Line Manager. Delegates will not be expected to share personal experiences as part of this training.

Delegates are encouraged to clear the decks as much as they can for the evening after the training and to have a named person who they can call on should they need to talk anything through that may come up on the day.

This practice-based course looks in depth at an issue that is commonly encountered by mental health practitioners and social workers and which has no easy answers. It gives an opportunity to review the relevance of the Mental Health Act & Mental Capacity Act, the Care Act 2014 and the involvement of environmental health, and to discuss local issues.

Please note:  there will be a 15 min break AM + PM and at least a 50 min lunch break.

  • Participants must be provided with protected time, in an environment free from all work-related duties and distractions to successfuly complete the training
  • Participants require access to a camera and microphone to be able to fully engage in the session
  • On the day of training, should the above requirements not be possible, participants should rebook for a different date when they are able to meet the requirements, failure to full engage in the session may result in non-issue of certificate and a request to repeat the training session.
