The Practice Development Manager Team have coordinated this children’s services master class titled ‘Working supportively with young people and families seeking asylum: Principles, Skills and Perspectives’.
On Tuesday 14th March this children’s services master class will take place starting at 9.30am until 12.30pm. This will be a virtual event provided by Jeremy Wide, Asylum and Refugee Team leader at 1625ip and Amy Barnard, Asylum and Refugee Intensive Support Worker at 1625ip. Amy has previously worked with Unseen supporting victims of trafficking and modern-day slavery.
The aims of this master class are to:
• Provide a brief introduction to 1625ip and to outline the support offered by the new asylum and refugee team.
• To develop an understanding around where the majority of asylum seekers and refugees in the UK come from.
• To explore the reasons why people flee their homes to come to the UK.
• To look at what routes they take to get to the UK.
• To appreciate some of the decisions that people face on these journeys.
• To gain some ideas around how we can communicate well with young people seeking asylum, and how we can help them to adjust culturally into the UK whilst maintaining their cultural identity and heritage.
• To provide an overview on how the UK asylum process works and how it feels for a young person or family within it.
• To discuss how the media portrays asylum seekers including myths and preconceptions and to look at how these can affect/ influence us as workers.
• To share resources in terms of what community services are available in our local area.
The theme of this master class links to the values which form our practice model for South Gloucestershire:
-See Me, Hear Me, Keep Me Safe
-Nothing About Us Without us
-Value Me for Who I am
-Open Honest Respectful Relationships
-We Build on What Works
-Children are Connected to People that are important to them and know their story
-Enable support at the right time, in the right place, in the right way
