We all know that Care Experienced people have a greater likelihood of experiencing inequalities. We also know that when ‘care experience’ is coupled with factors such as ‘Sex’, ‘Race’, ‘Disability’ etc. young people talk to us about experiencing ‘double discrimination’.  In this session, let’s be clear about the inequalities faced by Care Experienced people and talk together about the actions we could all take to reduce and eliminate them.

This session will be held in Kingswood Civic Centre - Room F17

Any questions call Chris Hill on 07749003099 or email chris.hill@southglos.gov.uk prior to the event

Code: SGC/23/0848 Disability isn’t a dirty word. Lunch and learn

Samantha Renke is a broadcaster, actor, campaigner, and educator; she wears many hats and has many labels including inspirational and burden.
In this session we will take an honest, no bars spared look into how disability is viewed in 2023.

She will be unpacking the harmful stereotypes disabled people face and how our own unconscious bias impacts the disability community and adds to further marginalisation of the largest minority group. She will touch on the medical model and social model of disability through lived experience and storytelling. As a physically disabled woman she will take you on a very emotional, relevant, self-aware and resonant journey, talking about internalised ablism, disability hate crime and abuse. The barriers she has faced and how she negates the harmful labels that still sadly comes with having a disability.

The session will also get you to start looking at how you can become a disability ally and advocate of the disability community and understand why disability isn’t a dirty word.
