This one day course gives practitioners who are working with parents and their families practical appraoches, tools and resources to use directly with them. It will also give practitioners an insight into how parents are coping and feeling and it will explore effective ways to support them.

Managers are expected to manage the performance of individuals in their team and this isn't always an easy task. This blended and engaging online course covers good management practice in a setting where managers are encouraged to learn from each other's experiences and are able to get HR advice on current issues. You’ll have an opportunity to review the council’s employee performance management procedures, consider the principles, benefits and responsibilities associated with performance management and the key techniques, skills and conduct of an effective performance Improvement meeting. 

Often addressing poor performance can be a challenge for managers and this course aims to provide you with a space to find out an overview of everything you need to do and ask questions to make sure that you are on the right track. This course promotes positive performance management and the steps you can put in place to prevent poor performance in the future and therefore we would recommend all managers attend this course whether they are managing poor performance or not.

This course is open only to line managers working for South Gloucestershire Council.

This Disability and Neurodiversity Awareness training will explore and demystify many of the topics and questions around this important subject.

We’ll look at topics including definitions, language, the Equality Act and reasonable adjustments, and have an in-depth look at ADHD and autism.

The training will be delivered in a conversational style, with questions and discussion encouraged, and we promise there will be no homework!

Clinical Skills Lab, Learning and Research Building , Southmead Hospital

This half day course follows CQC requirements on the administration of medication. It includes trainer presentation, discussion, and a short multiple-choice assessment at the end to check the information has been retained by participants. Relevant handouts/paperwork will be provided. This course is aimed at any adult social care staff in South Gloucestershire, working in domiciliary, residential and day care services (statutory sector AND IVP sector agencies).

This workshop provides an opportunity to consider attachment theory; application and intervention; trauma theory; impact and assessment; and recovery planning and assessment. Designed with the specific aim of informing, engaging, and delivering an understanding of historical, biological, observational, cultural and neuroscience attachment…...the very core of what it is to be.
The day will set out attachment and trauma perspectives based on casework for child and family social workers, education, residential care professionals and family placement professionals, kinship and foster and adoption carers.
Drawing on child development and attachment theory the workshop will seek to assist attendees in assessing and developing attachment based interventions so that we have the professional language and the professional/personal skills and confidence in this key area of trauma recovery practice.

The workshop will be led by Richard Rose, Director of Child Trauma Intervention Services Ltd (CTIS) which seeks to engage with children affected by early life trauma and to help them achieve their full potential. Richard undertakes consultancy and training on Life Story Therapy and working with 'hard to reach' children and adolescents and develops academic training programmes in the UK and internationally. Prior to founding CTIS in 2011, Richard worked in the UK in local authority child protection and in the highly regarded residential therapeutic treatment agency SACCS, including four years as the Clinical Practice Director of the Mary Walsh Institute. Throughout his career, Richard has worked with children and their carers in out of home care and family placements, with the aim of enabling placements to become healthy and nurturing through enhanced understanding and attachment. He is the author of three books including Life Story Therapy: A new therapy for traumatised children – A model for practice, published in 2012 and Innovative Therapeutic Life Story Work 2017. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Social Work and Social Policy at La Trobe University.

This short workshop commissioned jointly by the South Gloucestershire Children’s Partnership and Safeguarding Adults Board will help you to understand how Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conferences (MARAC) work in South Gloucestershire, and give you confidence in knowing how and when to refer to MARAC. It aims to give an update about the roles of everyone involved. It is free to attend by anyone who works with children or adults in South Gloucestershire

• Managing allegations
• Allyship and Role Model Behaviour
• How to identify and manage racism within the team and in social care workers practice
• Encouraging managers to integrate race equality into their agenda at their team meetings

This training course provides Care Workers with the essential skills and knowledge to apply and comply with the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 when carrying out their role.

The MCA applies to every health and social care worker who is involved in the care, treatment or support of people who are unable to make all or some decisions themselves. Care Quality Commission Inspectors are increasingly asking care workers to explain their responsibilities under the MCA.

The MCA provides legal protection from liability for carrying out care and treatment of people who lack capacity to consent, provided that care workers:

• Understand the principles of the MCA
• Have carried out a capacity assessment and reasonably believe that the person lacks capacity.
• Reasonably believe the action they have taken is in the best interests of the person.

Learning Outcome
1. Understand what mental capacity is and what might affect the mental capacity of the people you work with
2. Be able to identify the decisions you are responsible for in your workplace
3. Be able to apply the MCA principles to the decisions you are responsible for
4. Be able to carry out an assessment of capacity
5. Be able to act and decide in the person’s best interests where they lack capacity for a particular decision.

Signs of Safety- Bitesize session- Building on families strengths

A bitesize session for people working with children and families in South Gloucestershire to be able to explore and gain confidence in building on families strengths using strength and safety questions.
