This workshop will provide attendees with a practice-rich day with a focus on breaking down and planning interventions for challenging cases. Those attending will be given an opportunity to explore 'live' cases with Richard Rose, who will offer guidance and practical tasks to support your work. In preparation for this training, those that have registered to attend will be invited to send specific anonymous case issues to be explored during the workshop. The programme will provide opportunities to share experiences, learn from colleagues and engage with credible strategies to promote protection, safeguarding and wellbeing for children and their families and carers.

The workshop will include theory, child development, assessment approaches and life case discussions.
Who Should Attend?: This training is aimed specifically at practitioners undertaking and supporting direct complex case work with children and young people within the community services sector.

The workshop will be led by Richard Rose, Director of Child Trauma Intervention Services Ltd (CTIS) which seeks to engage with children affected by early life trauma and to help them achieve their full potential. Richard undertakes consultancy and training on Life Story Therapy and working with 'hard to reach' children and adolescents and develops academic training programmes in the UK and internationally. Prior to founding CTIS in 2011, Richard worked in the UK in local authority child protection and in the highly regarded residential therapeutic treatment agency SACCS, including four years as the Clinical Practice Director of the Mary Walsh Institute. Throughout his career, Richard has worked with children and their carers in out of home care and family placements, with the aim of enabling placements to become healthy and nurturing through enhanced understanding and attachment. He is the author of three books including Life Story Therapy: A new therapy for traumatised children – A model for practice, published in 2012 and Innovative Therapeutic Life Story Work 2017. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Social Work and Social Policy at La Trobe University.

The Purpose for the support groups



We realise that fostering can be really difficult at times. Perhaps the only people who really understand it are other foster carers and so therefore we want to give you a place to meet up.

There will be biscuits and/or cake, coffee, tea, and an opportunity for an informal chat at all of the meetings.

Although these will be informal meetings, each session will have a brief agenda, attendance list, and agreed group rules. This is to help those who don’t know anyone and feel awkward about coming along to a new meeting, to feel that they won’t be left alone on the side-lines.

Sometimes there will be speakers and topics as requested by the group, this will hopefully make it as relevant to your fostering as you like.

These sessions should be recorded on your Personal Development Plan (PDP).

This training is specifically for practitioners in South Glos Council's adult social care division, i.e. Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Social Work Assistants, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Senior Practitioners etc.

The session will explore how strength-based practice fits with professional values, the legal framework and the role of Adult Social Care in 2023. We will look at the theoretical basis for strengths-based approaches, current and past. Delegates will share examples of their current practice as well as exploring the use and benefits of strengths-based questions/interventions in assessment, care & support planning, review and adult safeguarding conversations with adults and carers to focus on wellbeing, outcomes and creative solutions to meet need.

Session Aim
To enable delegates to gain a consistent set of underpinning knowledge and to further develop skills and confidence in applying a strength-based approach in practice

The session will aim to build a better understanding of what self-harm is, why people turn towards self-harm behaviours and what signs and indicators there are for self-harm behaviours.

The course will also help you to develop understanding around helping to support someone who is self-harming and best practice response.

The key aim is to build confidence, reduce stigma and create a better response to individuals who self-harm.

The trainer has requested that attendees have their cameras on during the session to ensure attendance and help with engagement.

The session will be interactive – with lots of opportunities for discussion.

A session for people working with children and families in South Gloucestershire to be able to explore and gain confidence in creating words and picture explanations for children and families.

Please note: All attendees must have already attended Signs of Safety Awareness session or Signs of Safety 2 day training to be able to attend this course.
