Code: SGC/25/0092 Dementia Training Using Positive Approaches (EVENT FULL) (Cancelled)

This practical one-day course is designed for anyone who works in a social care setting and who interacts and communicates with people who have dementia.

You will consider what it is like to see the world from the side of the person with dementia, understand why it is important to adapt approaches, recognise unmet needs and respond to situations you may find challenging. We will discuss why it is important for a person with dementia to be active and occupied.

Course description

The day will provide participants with practical ways of approaching and interacting with a person with dementia. We will look at understanding how to approach individuals safely and consistently, as well as how to connect with the person in a way that meets their preferences and needs. We will consider methods of interacting that help to reduce distress. The course will enable participants to recognise the strengths of people who have dementia and will look at ways of using these strengths to help interact in a positive way.

The standard charge for this course is £103.50 per day. Please refer to our Course Charges on the Home page for information on discounts and exemptions

Please click here to view and download the course handouts

Please have a digital copy (or print if you prefer) of the course WORKBOOK to bring along to the session. (All other resources are available for digital download and storage via the same link should you wish to use them during or after the event)

Also, please be aware that some of the resources contain sensitive content, that you may find upsetting. This training aims to educate and raise awareness, but it can evoke emotional responses, particularly for individuals with personal connections to child or adult bereavements, or the incidents themselves.

If you find the content overwhelming, we encourage you to prioritise your well-being. Take breaks, reflect on your boundaries, and seek support from trusted individuals or professionals as needed. For assistance during or after the training, please reach out to the trainer or your line manager in the first instance, contact Interchange the staff counselling service, or you can also access Thrive.

We are committed to creating an inclusive learning environment and promoting empathy and respect for all.

The training is organised by South Gloucestershire Safeguarding Children Partnership and is targeted at all staff from all agencies who are working directly with children, or adults who are parents. Effective child protection depends not only on reliable and accepted procedures for all staff involved with children, but also on their skills, knowledge and judgement and the ability to work together co-operatively. Staff with lead roles in child protection require specialised training in order to carry out their work with abused children and families. Please note it is recommended to leave a minimum of 3 months between attending Introduction to Child Protection and Advanced Child Protection.

Please DO NOT book onto the Advanced Child Protection course, unless you have attended the Introduction to Child Protection course. The knowledge needed for this course is dependent on you having attended the previous session. Thank you.

The half-day Raising Safeguarding Concerns course is essential training for all front-line staff and managers who are involved in providing services to adults at risk and who work directly with service users. The course content is mapped to the learning outcomes in the local Safeguarding Adults Training Standards (published Dec 2017) as well as to relevant national occupational standards including the Care Certificate (Standard 10). Course attendance is monitored by the Safeguarding Adults Board. The standard charge for this course is £49. Please refer to our Course Charges on the Home page for information on discounts and exemptions.

Code: SGC/25/0043 The Record Business (Children's Services)

This course looks at transforming the quality of your approach and how you record that new way of working:
your assessments, care plans, visit forms, & all written work will be clear, concise and bring to life what life must be like for each child or young person you're working with.

To do this the course will show you how to draw on your knowledge from research, experience and practice combined with an understanding of the child's needs within their family or the context in which the child lives.
It will show you how the facts-analysis-judgement approach works: and how it will help as you move towards the Signs of Safety way of working.

This course aims to make you confident in understanding what is relevant and meaningful and then show you how to write that down effectively. The standard charge for this course is £70.

Please refer to our Course Charges on the Home page for information on discounts and exemptions.
