Event description
Are you seeking advice from others who may have “walked in your shoes?” Do you have fostering experience that could benefit other carers? Or are you new to fostering and not sure what to expect? Come along to the X Change, share your ideas and learn from others within a supportive atmosphere. A “peer mentoring” approach will be used, so that carers coming with a particular issue, and those offering advice can all feel heard. Carers with knowledge of a particular topic will be asked to take part, outside speakers can also be invited. All sessions will run from 10am to 1pm, the last hour will an opportunity to bring and share lunch and continue your discussions. Foster Carers across both areas are invited to come together to share knowledge, and experience. This is an open group, but please let us know if you are planning to come.
Learning outcomes
Helen Moore, one of our consultant social workers, and a colleague from the Police, Julie Francis, will be attending this group to talk about the procedures that foster carers should follow in the event that a Young Person goes missing when in care. This is something that can be very worrying, not least if you don’t know where they are, but even when you do know where they are.

Many questions arise such as when do I call and log that my placement is missing? Who do I log it with? If I know where they are, is there any point in notifying the police? What is a Trigger Plan? What information should I be given? Are there meetings that I need to be involved in? What information should I be recording – dates/times/car registrations? What is a return home interview? When and where does this happen?

As is so often the case in Fostering, there isn’t an exact ‘in this scenario this is what you do’ as each case can often be quite different, but this will be an ideal opportunity for you to be able to find out what the expectation is on you as a foster carer, and you will also be able to ask questions.

Child Sexual Exploitation does unfortunately happen in South Gloucestershire and there are procedures that are constantly being reviewed to improve the safety of our young people, but you need to know what your role in this process is , as well as the information that you should be aware of.

We will also have three foster carers present who have had experience of these situations and will be happy to share their experience and offer advice.
