Event description
This year’s Education Conference will begin with two teachers talking about the Attachment Awareness Programmes that they have been working on in their schools, one Primary and one Secondary. Sarah Bevis, from Parkwall Primary School, will look at what interventions are in place to support vulnerable pupils and Ellen Tomkies, from Patchway Community College, is looking at how they are adapting the ‘Ready to Learn’ approach. We will then have Sue Lewis coming to talk to us about ‘Careerpilot’. This is an amazing website that will hopefully really help our young people in making informed choices about their future. The site can help them to identify the skills they have, and from this, what courses/jobs may suite them. If you have smart phones/tablets, bring these along as I believe we will be having a play with what the site can actually offer and how to navigate it. It is hoped that a young person may also come and talk to us about how they have found it. Following a break there will then be a workshop that will take us to lunch and another workshop in the afternoon. You will need to choose which workshops you would like to attend. Please select one workshop from the morning session and one from the afternoon session. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please could you add your choices when making your booking request? Finally if you have any dietary requirements could you please indicate this at your time of booking, thank you.
Learning outcomes
Morning Workshop please request one.
1 An Introduction to Emotion Coaching with Simone Barnes: - this session will look at how to respond positively to children with challenging behaviours and also look at the feelings underlying those behaviours. The session will be aimed at those children who are emotionally functioning at 11 years or younger.

2 Navigating the SEND system in school with Sarah Gunner and an Education Psychologist -– what to look for if you have concerns about a child, what support to ask for and what happens at the statutory assessment age. Please note that this workshop is only for carers and parents and not designated teachers or school staff.

3 The Teenage Brain…..Thinking Aloud:
Behaviours that we see and how we can help and support our secondary aged children as they go through this period.

Afternoon Workshops: please select one

4 Timeline in a looked after child’s educational life - Steve Claypoole - This session will look at the educational journey of a looked after child from primary through to post 16, the education meetings which take place, PEP’s, the provision that is available, knowing what questions to ask and when, as well as the role of the virtual school. This will be a problem solving session which is highly interactive and not purely an information giving session.

5 Transitions - Jo Hiam and Jayne Graham our virtual school teachers will lead this session. This topic covers a wide spectrum of moving from one place to another e.g. between home and school, during the school day as well as from primary to secondary. Ali Cade (Foster carer) will also talk about her young person’s experience of transition.

6 Friendships and making relationships - Kate Murphy
This workshop will explore the nature of friendship, how to make and maintain friends, how to be a good friend. We will also look at some ways to get children & young people to feel good and care for themselves.
