Code: SGC/21/0653 Engaging and working with fathers and male carers in Children’s Services

Fathers and other male carers make a difference to children’s lives, but sometimes feel that child welfare services are not for them. Practitioners often try to involve them in services, but sometimes find it difficult to engage them. In this workshop, we will consider recent national and international research on this important topic, discussing issues and exploring ways to incorporate these ideas into our practice. By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

1. Describe three different approaches to fatherhood.
2. Choose an appropriate strategy to engage both absent and present fathers and carers as part of a whole family approach.
3. Incorporate an analysis of a father’s/male carer’s strengths and risks into written records and professional assessments.

This is aimed at all professionals and carers who come into contact with young people and families, including managers who have responsibility for supervision, policy and decision-making

Code: SGC/20/1333 Launch Pad Session 2: Supporting and Facilitating time with Family. Dedicated Induction, Training and Support Group for Connected Carers including Special Guardians

What is it? This is a new dedicated Induction, Training and Support Group for Connected Carers, Including Special Guardians
Why are we running it? We recognise that your situation is very different to that of main stream foster carers. The new role that you find yourself in now, is often not a pathway you may have planned on taking. Unlike foster carers, you are thrown in at the deep end without having had a course to prepare you for what lies ahead, and how ‘The System’ works. This course aims to do that as well as recognise the particular difficulties that you as ‘Kinship Carers’, whatever your role, face.
How will it run? There will be six sessions, each lasting approximately 2-2.5 hours, which will take place over the course of a year. It is hoped that you will attend all six, but as new carers arrive, they can join the programme at any stage. The sessions will be led in the main by Social workers from our team. There will be light refreshment of tea and coffee provided at each session, but it would be rather nice if we could take it in turns to bring and share some food. The first session will be catered for, but we will discuss how this works for future sessions at the end of our first meeting.

This session will focus on 'Keeping in Touch'.  The legal system refers to this as Contact, but this is a word that we know our children and young people do not like, so are trying to avoid it.

Code: SGC/21/0207 Motivational Interviewing: Refresh and Practice Development (a.m.)

South Glos Council employees:  if you don't already have a Zoom Licence, please see attached document.

An interactive 3-hour workshop facilitated by Phil Harris to enable adult care practitioners who completed the initial 1-day Motivational Interviewing course to refresh their knowledge, skills and confidence and to help them consolidate their learning with this approach.

This follow-up course will give participants an opportunity to review their prior learning and how they have applied these approaches in context of the 3 C’s model. This will include reflective practice and bringing a case study to the session based on the Motivational Interviewing Case Formulation supplied at the end of the one day training. Based on this we will identify further areas of development and rehearse the critical skills in a peer-review context.

Code: SGC/21/1289 Raising Safeguarding Concerns - Adults (Trained Trainer - Silva Care) (EVENT FULL)

The multi-agency South Gloucestershire Safeguarding Adults Board oversees the Joint Policy and Procedures for Safeguarding Adults in this area. It is essential that a wide range of staff working in local authority, health and social care agencies are fully aware of the key issues in safeguarding vulnerable adults and of how the policy affects them in their front-line roles. The half-day Raising Safeguarding Concerns course is essential training for all front-line staff and managers who are involved in providing services to adults at risk and who work directly with service users. The course content is mapped to the learning outcomes in the local Safeguarding Adults Training Standards (published Dec 2017) as well as to relevant national occupational standards including the Care Certificate (Standard 10). Course attendance is monitored by the Safeguarding Adults Board. The standard charge for this course is £40. Please refer to our Course Charges on the Home page for information on discounts and exemptions.

Registering and declaring your interests - what every councillor needs to know!

This session will explore the councillor Code of Conduct and what every councillor needs to know about registering and declaring interests. We will focus on the type of situation when you might have a conflict of interest and possibly have to withdraw from making a decision. We will look at particular issues for Town and Parish members and also for councillors who are twin-hatted. The aim of the session is that all attendees, however experienced you are and whatever council you are on, will come away more confident in how to deal with this important aspect of being a councillor.
