This is the 2nd day of the Autism Awareness course,  specifically for social work practitioners responsible for assessing the needs of autistic adults.  Social care practitioners must have attended day 1 Autism Spectrum Conditions prior to attending this course.

It is delivered by colleagues from Avon & Wiltshire Partnership, with high level of expertise in supporting adults with autism. 

It will include a focus on:

Issues in assessment:
Opportunity to reflect on previous assessments with autistic adults
Consider how someone with autism might be eligible (unmet) needs in each outcome area of Care Act 2014
Why some ‘able’ adults get overlooked for support
Why a good assessment is essential for autistic adults – mental health co-morbidities- anxiety/low mood/suicidal risks
Reasons why assessment may be difficult eg apparent lack of engagement, communication of needs
Impact on families and carers,
How to work with parents 

Autism and other social care law. Autism Act, Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act and Equality Act 

Assessment:
Preparing for assessment, gathering information, time requirement
Using principles of safety, clarity, precision, empathy, and low arousal
How to structure visits, assessments and reviews for autistic adults
How to build rapport and develop trust
How to alter the way you communicate
Assessing sensory needs within context of the Care Act 

Service provision:
Working with care providers and setting up placements for autistic adults
What does a good service look like?
Critically evaluating providers including specialist provision
Low level long term support methods

This evening course is specifically for Foster Carers and will cover information on the law, guidance and procedures that protect and safeguard children nationally and within your local area. It will also provide evidence towards meeting Induction Standard Six; Safeguard Children and Young People.

This course will explore the crucial role that carers play as a key partner of Adult Social Care. 

We will look at key data about carers, including in relation to some of the challenges that are commonly faced. You will also benefit from the opportunity to reflect on your own experiences, personal and professional, of caring and carers, and to learn from the lived experiences of carers including a guest speaker from South Gloucestershire. The Carers’ Support Centre will share their expertise in relation to working with and supporting carers over many years. Alongside colleagues, you will explore how to apply 3Cs, strengths-based approaches and legal literacy in your engagement with carers in line with South Gloucestershire Council ‘Carer Practitioner Guidance’. A key theme throughout the day will be recognising the positive impact that you, as a practitioner, can have in promoting the rights and wellbeing of carers and as a result, the wellbeing of adult(s) they care for.

As a setting with a high number of children entitled to 2yr funding and / or Early Years Pupil Premium, we would like to invite you to our locality-based disadvantage network, based at the Children’s Centre.

We will be discussing the challenges faced by families in your area and the impact this has on your setting. We will be exploring how we can creatively work together to share our knowledge, skills, and expertise to improve outcomes for children.

The multi-agency South Gloucestershire Safeguarding Adults Board oversees the Joint Policy and Procedures for Safeguarding Adults in this area. It is essential that a wide range of staff working in local authority, health and social care agencies are fully aware of the key issues in safeguarding vulnerable adults and of how the policy affects them in their front-line roles. The half-day Raising Safeguarding Concerns course is essential training for all front-line staff and managers who are involved in providing services to adults at risk and who work directly with service users. The course content is mapped to the learning outcomes in the local Safeguarding Adults Training Standards (published Dec 2017) as well as to relevant national occupational standards including the Care Certificate (Standard 10). Course attendance is monitored by the Safeguarding Adults Board. The standard charge for this course is £40. This support network is an informal opportunity for Officers of the Committee to get together and network with others in a similar role, to learn from each other’s experiences, to discuss common issues with our team and to start to plan for future succession.
