Three quarters of disabled people have left a shop or business because of poor disability awareness. The Equality Act 2010 states that service providers must ensure that they meet the requirements of equality law. This includes making sure staff are sufficiently trained to deal with and support customers or service users, along with the need to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people. 

For South Gloucestershire Council employees, this training links to ‘Empowering Others’ and ‘Customer and Community Focussed’ whereby employees are aware of how to meet the diverse needs of our customers and take care to be inclusive. These are part of the Behaviours within the Council's Framework. 

This course will help staff to develop their understanding of the difference between the Social and Medical models of Disability, give guidance on legislation and best practice and help employees to understand how to better support disabled staff and customers/service users. The session will include a built in action plan addressing current barriers to supporting disabled people.
 
This 1-day workshop will provide the skills to help meet these essential service requirements.

A dugs and alcohol worker, Laura James will be facilitating a support group for foster carers, special guardians and adopters who currently have young people misusing substances. The course will cover: Why do young people take risks? Confidence to try techniques to help your young person explore why they are using substances. How to look after your young person if they are using substances.

This training aims to provide attendees with a greater knowledge of human trafficking and slavery and explore the issues facing individuals who have been trafficked, how to correctly identify and spot the signs of potential exploitation and how to report suspected incidents. This course is suitable for staff who have regular contact with suppliers; contractors; the public and families (including adults and children and young people; AND/OR regular involvement in safeguarding issues; and managers who manage these services). The training will cover: • What trafficking and slavery are • Nature and scale of the issue – nationally, regionally, locally • Types of trafficking and slavery • How to recognise the signs • National and local examples of the issue • The National Referral Mechanism – what it is • South Gloucestershire Council employee responsibilities This is a 90 minute awareness session available at both KCC and BMR. This is a condensed version of the 3-hour Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery training which is available at KCC only, on a quarterly basis.

This 1-day course is specifically for all council-employed Adult Social Care practitioners: Social Workers, OTs, Social Work Assistants, OT Assistants; Senior Practitioners, Team & Service Managers.
It is a “core” internal training course which builds on and complements the existing multi-agency Safeguarding Adults training programmes that provide a foundation of knowledge and skills.

The course will enable all adult social care practitioners in South Glos Council to:

1. Update their understanding of the legal duties and principles in relation to safeguarding adults (e.g. within the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act).

2. Increase their confidence to work to national and local expectations and processes for safeguarding adults.

3. Refresh and refine their skills and knowledge around working with risk, effective decision-making and communication to promote confidence in adult safeguarding.

The multi-agency South Gloucestershire Safeguarding Adults Board oversees the Joint Policy and Procedures for Safeguarding Adults in this area. It is essential that a wide range of staff working in local authority, health and social care agencies are fully aware of the key issues in safeguarding vulnerable adults and of how the policy affects them in their front-line roles. The half-day Raising Safeguarding Concerns course is essential training for all front-line staff and managers who are involved in providing services to adults at risk and who work directly with service users. The course content is mapped to the learning outcomes in the local Safeguarding Adults Training Standards (published Dec 2017) as well as to relevant national occupational standards including the Care Certificate (Standard 10). Course attendance is monitored by the Safeguarding Adults Board. The standard charge for this course is £40. This 1-day course will build on delegates’ learning from the Awareness of Domestic Violence and Abuse e-learning module which should be completed before attending this course. The Intermediate training day will provide additional content as set out below.
