Code: SGC/20/1340 Children's Services - Good Practice Workshop. Theme: Risk

“This course is only available and relevant to those who work within children’s services (including foster carers). Please only book on if you work within these areas”

These workshops are for South Glos Council Integrated Childrens Services staff only, i.e. who come into contact with young people and families. This includes managers who have responsibility for supervision, policy and decision-making.
The aim is to build good practice across children and young people's services, both challenging and supporting front line practitioners to be clear about what good practice looks like. There will be a focus on examples of good practice and support to staff to self evaluate their own practice against these examples. The aim is for everyone to share and learn from the things that went well, not so well, and what people would do differently to improve things.

Code: SGC/20/1332 Getting to the Truth (Cancelled)

This course is for South Glos Council INTEGRATED CHILDREN'S SERVICES Staff only. Investigating any safeguarding issue is the classic search for the truth, and building evidence is essential. Some people have hidden agendas and mislead, some people construct lies to avoid scrutiny. How then do we teach staff to identify and capture lies? What strategies do we have to challenge lying behaviour and also maintain working relationships?

Code: SGC/20/341 Learning through the Seasons - Autumn (£) (Cancelled)

This course is aimed at anyone new or developing their outdoor skills, or those who have knowledge and want further inspiration to develop an all year round outdoor practice.

This is a fantastic opportunity to look at how play and learning outdoors links in with the seasons. We will look at different types of play and learning to support child development. We will introduce basic outdoor and woodland skills, simple tools, identifying risks, hazards and benefits to help you in starting to develop your own practice in the natural environment. Autumn can often be a challenging month outdoors but we will explore more ideas to develop your confidence and knowledge working with children outdoors in the elements that the great British weather throws at us.

We will be outside whatever the weather. Waterproofs, stout walking boots/welly boots and warm clothing is advised.

This is the fourth of four standalone sessions offered throughout the academic year, based on the seasons.

Code: SGC/20/0541 Motivational Interviewing (Council Adult Care Staff only)

This will be delivered via Zoom and hosted by Phil Harris (Training Exchange). You will be sent Zoom joining instructions nearer the time.

If you don't already have a Zoom license, please contact ICT via a Webform to request one.

THIS COURSE IS FOR SOUTH GLOS COUNCIL ADULT SOCIAL CARE STAFF ONLY.

(Please note - following this initial 1-day training, half-day Motivational Interviewing: Refresh & Practice Development sessions are avilable to help practitioners further develop their skills - see the website for dates and details.)

Motivational interviewing is a leading approach to increase motivation and commitment to change. It was first developed in the alcohol field, but as they had identified that there was no specific addiction psychology, it has been developed in a wide range of areas including social work, offending, mental health and homelessness fields. It has proven particularly effective with stuck or entrenched people from a wide range of backgrounds.

This course maps the key factors that elicit change and demonstrates how Motivational Interviewing works alongside these forces. Drawing on both person centred and directive techniques, it offers practical skills to assist the workers to helps people articulate and recognise the need for change. As such, it is an effective primer to increase engagement with people who have not yet achieved a sufficient level of commitment and move them into action with confrontation. As such, it can inform and develop the 3 conversations approach by increasing engagement, develop potential people strengths and create self-directed motivation for change.

Who is the Course For?: Motivational Interviewing is useful for a wide range of social issues. Its primary focus is on igniting motivation to change, and so it is helpful when people are stuck in problems and not advancing in change. As such it is helpful in all change and recovery based services such as mental health, substance misuse, offending social work, domestic violence, supported housing, young people’s services, family work and more besides.

Method of Delivery: The training programme comes with an extensive booklet for each participant. The training course is highly interactive, even during presentations. It uses a wide variety of learning approaches including presentations, pairs and small group work exercises and self-assessment. The course is also supported with free e-learning and further resources to re-cap, review and refresh learning.
