This half day course follows CQC requirements on the administration of medication. It includes trainer presentation, discussion, and a short multiple-choice assessment at the end to check the information has been retained by participants. Relevant handouts/paperwork will be provided. This course is aimed at any adult social care staff in South Gloucestershire, working in domiciliary, residential and day care services (statutory sector AND IVP sector agencies).

Keynote speaker: Alex Ruck Keene, an experienced barrister from 39 Essex Chambers whose practice focuses on mental capacity and mental health law.  
A number of workshops will run during the day. Each delegate will have the opportunity to attend two of the workshops. Sign-up for workshops will be during conference registration in the morning, between 8.45am and 9.30am.

These workshops are aimed at all professionals who come into contact with young people and families, including managers who have responsibility for supervision, policy and decision-making.
The aim is to build good practice across children and young people's services, both challenging and supporting front line practitioners to be clear about what good practice looks like. There will be a focus on examples of good practice and support to staff to self evaluate their own practice against these examples. The aim is for everyone to share and learn from the things that went well, not so well, and what people would do differently to improve things.

This course helps members to understand the changing relationship between councils and the NHS, especially scrutiny of STPs and ICSs. This includes arrangements for joint scrutiny where two or more council areas are involved. This training aims to provide attendees with a greater knowledge of human trafficking and slavery and explore the issues facing individuals who have been trafficked, how to correctly identify and spot the signs of potential exploitation and how to report suspected incidents. This course is suitable for staff who have regular contact with suppliers; contractors; the public and families (including adults and children and young people; AND/OR regular involvement in safeguarding issues; and managers who manage these services). The training will cover: • What trafficking and slavery are • Nature and scale of the issue – nationally, regionally, locally • Types of trafficking and slavery • How to recognise the signs • National and local examples of the issue • The National Referral Mechanism – what it is • South Gloucestershire Council employee responsibilities This is a 90 minute awareness session available at both KCC and BMR. This is a condensed version of the 3-hour Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery training which is available at KCC only, on a quarterly basis.

The Foundation Workshop is best suited for professionals wanting to learn and implement Makaton within their workplace. This workshop provides a detailed introduction to Makaton which has a balance of theory and practice.

During this course you will learn stage 1 – 4 plus additional signs and symbols and develop a deeper understanding of Makaton to include how research confirms the benefits of using Makaton for all.

You will receive a certificate of attendance and booklet which includes signs and symbols when you have attended all sessions.

Once completed you can attend Makaton networks for continuing professional development, sharing ideas, strategies, signs and symbols.

Code: SGC/19/421 Mental Capacity Act (MCA) Training Programme - Module 2: Complex Best Interest Decisions

South Gloucestershire Council has launched a new interactive training programme that gives Health and Social Care Workers the skills, knowledge, confidence and practice to apply and comply with the Mental Capacity Act 2005. The programme is made up of interactive learning workshops. The new skills and knowledge gained from the workshops are then applied in the workplace and you will send us evidence. You'll be given feedback as you acheive the required good practice and compliance standard of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. The programme is designed for Care Provider managers, Social Worker and Occupational Therapy staff and managers, nurses and all other professionals working in health and social care. You can select from a series of modules as relevant to your job which are listed below.

How the programme works -
You attend a module workshop
You then submit evidence of what you have learned in the workplace (usually within six weeks)
You receive feedback which may be shared with your employer.

Once you have achieved the required standard for compliance and good practice in line with the MCA code of practice you will be awarded a certificate for that module.

Continuing Professional Development
This programme can be used by Social Workers as a basis for Accredited Learning under the South Gloucestershire Council/ University of the West of England Integrated Professional Development Programme
