Event description

This 3-hour webinar is specifically for all council-employed Adult Social Care Social Work Assistants and OT Assistants.

It is a “core” internal training course which builds on and complements the existing multi-agency Safeguarding Adults training programmes that provide a foundation of knowledge and skills.

The course will enable all adult social care practitioners in South Glos Council to:

1. Update their understanding of the legal duties and principles in relation to safeguarding adults (e.g. within the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act).

2. Increase their confidence to work to national and local expectations and processes for safeguarding adults.

3. Refresh and refine their skills and knowledge around working with risk, effective decision-making and communication to promote confidence in adult safeguarding.

Learning outcomes
Participants will use case examples to explore their adult safeguarding practice skills, knowledge and confidence. During the session we will use a Making Safeguarding Personal perspective to think about good practice in decision making, undertaking s42 enquiries, working with risk and working with colleagues.

We will be focusing on:
* Our legal duties and the legislation that supports adult safeguarding practice including human rights-based practice.
* Effective communication whilst undertaking enquiries, using person centred and strengths-based approaches; respectful challenge;
* Developing professional curiosity
* Working with risk, how to assess risk of harm to a person, how to reduce that risk
* Working with colleagues in our own and other agencies
* Working with advocates and representatives
* Dilemmas – including people who do not wish to be involved with adult safeguarding, when access to the person is hindered, when the person wishes to take risks that threaten their vital interests and more!

Practitioners from the Safeguarding Adults team will be present to talk through local expectations and processes
