Event description
Talking Mats is a visual framework that uses picture symbols to help people with a variety of communication difficulties to communicate more effectively.

The approach ensures that people are involved in choice making and expressing opinions in an accessible way. It is an excellent tool for encouraging inclusive practice.

Talking Mats is used by clinical practitioners, carers and support workers in a wide range of health, social work, residential and education settings.

Further information is available on the talking mats website https://www.talkingmats.com

Course format:

The course runs over two half day sessions one month apart. Participants are required to film themselves carrying out a Talking Mat® before the second session. The recording of the talking mat will be used for reflection and learning. We will also consider how to use it in your work setting. The use of digital talking mats is also demonstrated.

There are 8 participants on each course to give time and space to discuss the experiences of carrying out a Talking Mat®.

Participants will receive a Talking Mat resource handbook, a set of symbols and a certificate on successful completion of the course.

Symbol sets available to choose from are: Leisure & Environment, Communication, Looking After Yourself, Health, Social Care
