Event description
This course is for South Glos Council INTEGRATED CHILDREN'S SERVICES Staff only. Investigating any safeguarding issue is the classic search for the truth, and building evidence is essential. Some people have hidden agendas and mislead, some people construct lies to avoid scrutiny. How then do we teach staff to identify and capture lies? What strategies do we have to challenge lying behaviour and also maintain working relationships?
Learning outcomes
Impression management: awareness of building professional impression, planning first contacts, understanding characteristics of the families you work with. Communication tips: how conversation works, effective listening, verbal and non-verbal signals, mindful behaviours for relationship building. Powerful questions: simple to crème de la crème questioning styles, best questions to ask children, triggering disclosure in children, conversing with children who are embarrassed/distressed. Getting to the truth: how to spot and challenge a lie, techniques for countering inappropriate or disruptive behaviour, responding to inappropriate and disruptive behaviour, coping with resistance.
