Event description
This workshop is for South Glos Council managers only.

The pressure on public finance means that our Council like all others is having to consider alternative sources of revenue.

The idea of Commercialism means different things to different people. It’s being applied in different ways by different authorities all over the country and so it’s quite difficult to define and to suggest one right approach for SGC.

The aim of this session isn’t to comment on the wider issues of whether commercialism has a place in the council. Instead, the focus will be on exploring the idea of commercialism in South Gloucs and on generating some discussion about the ways we may achieve more commercial practices.

The session will be delivered by David Elverson who is Managing Director of Commercial Gov. who provide training, consultancy and marketing support to public sector organisations as they develop commercially. David has previously worked for Understanding ModernGov, the training division of GovNet Communications.

For more details contact Gary Willis in the HR Workforce Development team.

Please note there is a charge of £20 to attend this session.
Learning outcomes

This session will encourage you to consider some key aspects that seem to be at the heart of commercialism;

· Making money – doing things differently or doing different things that will generate income.

· Behaving in a more business-like way – adopting some of the positive culture and behaviours that are sometimes associated with commercial organisations.

· Commissioning and competing – the separation of service commissioners as ‘buyers’ of what’s needed and service providers who may also compete for other business
