Event description
Who am I? The role of a key person is vital in nurturing a child’s sense of self. As they grow they develop all sorts of ideas about themselves with regard to abilities, attributes and appearances. These are acquired and influenced by their perceptions of how they are accepted and valued by significant others.
We will discover ways in which we can support and nurture a child’s sense of belonging and identity, through your role as a key person within your early years setting.
“There is in every child at every stage a new miracle of vigorous unfolding, which constitutes a new hope and a new responsibility for all.”
Erik Erikson
“In the social jungle of human existence, there is no feeling of being alive without a sense of identity.”
Erik Erikson
Learning outcomes
To compare and contrast the definitions of self-concept, self-identity, sense of belonging and self-esteem.
To identify and share what can inform a child’s sense of self.
To consider the impact of our role as ‘key person’ as both ‘significant other’ and in acknowledging and developing a child’s multiple identities.
