Target Audience: Adult care practitioners, particularly staff who are new to the council. Also for staff who have not done any Direct Payments training in recent years, or who want to explore and further clarify their own understanding around promoting the direct payments option with service users. Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Social Work Assistants, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Team Managers and Senior Practitioners in all adult social care teams. The workshop combines interactive discussion with presentation of material. It allows practitioners space to ask the questions they have about Direct Payments, to reflect on the advantages and possible risks involved, and to explore how to implement good practice when supporting this key process in delivering more personalised services.
Learning outcomes
To cover the basics of direct payments, so that practitioners are able to talk confidently about the Direct Payments process, the responsibilities and benefits of direct payments, and the potential and actual use of direct payments. To understand how to set up support packages that incorporate use of a direct payment.

To understand and explain to service users and carers the benefits and disadvantages of the various options for spending those budgets. This would include:

Direct Payments: with input from a service users, what can direct payments offer service users and what do service users need to be aware of? What are the risks and how can these be managed?

How do the direct payment support providers work with service users, what are their key roles and responsibilities? Representatives from South Gloucestershire’s Direct Payments Support Providers will be at the training.

Talking about direct payments: an experienced practitioner will share their experiences of offering direct payments, and the potential issues and barriers

Commissioned services: how they work, the advantages and drawbacks. A member of the Brokerage Team will talk through how the new commissioned services approach fits with direct payments.
