Event description
This new course replaces the old course "Promoting Health and Emotional Resilience".  It will be split into three sessions:

  • Holistic Health Birth to Age 11
  • Holistic Health Age 12 - 18
  • Resilience Lab session for foster carers (to follow at some point in 2022 not yet on CPD site)

All three sessions will be set up separately on the CPD site.  It is anticipated that most of you will probably attend only one of the Holistic Health sessions, although if you have children that fall into both age groups then of course you are welcome to attend both.

Liz Dando and Dr Amanda Cundy will be leading the Holistic Health Sessions, which will be tailored to the needs of the age groups.  They will look at the health of the child, what a health assessment involves, what carers can do to support the child in their care, the role of school nurses, care leavers and UASC (Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children)  health.

Nikki Giles, our relationship and sexual health improvement practioner and Jani Stanoson, our young people drug and alcohol specialist, will both be joining us for this session
Learning outcomes
Carers
* Will know what a health assessment involves,
* Know what to do to support the child in their care
* Understand the role of school nurses

Drugs and Alcohol

To explore some of the reasons why young people use substances, as well as thinking through when this becomes problematic.

To receive some practical tips about how to have constructive conversations about drugs and alcohol.

To know the risks, effects and how to try and address some safety aspects around alcohol, cannabis and nitrous oxide.

To be aware of further support and how to access this.

Relationships and Sexual Health

As a result of receiving this training, carers will be able to;

1. Identify a range of online resources that are age-appropriate, accessible and relevant to the needs and priorities of children and young people, including how you can use these sites to stimulate conversation

2. Recognise the importance of exploring ‘everyday consent’ and ‘sexual consent’ so as to ensure young people recognise the importance of respectful communication based on equality

3. Identify resources and information sources that can be used to enable young people to recognise, in a very practical sense, the boundaries between healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviours, including exploring how to respond and who can support

4. Recognising how pornography and sexualised imagery influences young people’s sense of appropriate body image and body confidence – as well as the influence on relationship behaviours and expectations

5. Recognise how young people’s mental health and wellbeing influences their choices, actions and behaviours in relationships

6. Identify the services available locally that support young people’s relationships and sexual health, including how to signpost to these
