Learning outcomes
1. Understanding the history of psychiatric medicines. We will explore the mental health continuum and look at the value of diagnosis and how this can influence prescribing choices. We will then look at the history of psychiatric treatments and medicines, this will help the group to dispel any common misconceptions. 2. Understanding and knowledge of the main groups of psychiatric medicines. We will explore the main groups of medicines prescribed and identify first line treatments for common mental health issues; this will include understanding generic and brand names of medicines and how prescribing choices may change across the life course. 3. Understanding what will impact efficacy. We will take a basic look at pharmacology in order to understand what can interfere with a prescribed medicines desired outcome. We will also consider how side effects can have an impact on concordance and social care assessments. You will identify when you should consider referring back to a medical professional. 4. Medicines management and the social care role. We will identify issues around the law and medicines in relation to what could be construed as dispensing and coercion, this will include identifying where individuals roles start and finish. 5. Understanding issues of capacity and ethics. We will explore how medicines can be used as a chemical restraint, how they can impact an individuals capacity and the ethical considerations around this. At the end of the session you should have a greater understanding of the use, effects and considerations regarding use of psychiatric medicines. The use of psychiatric medicines is very complex and can generate much debate. Whist this is interesting we will not be taking a view on this in this session.
