Event description
Early years practitioners face a challenging task in identifying very young children with additional needs and simultaneously providing support and advice to concerned parents. SENCO stands for Special Educational Needs Coordinator, and they have a legal duty to follow the SEND Code of Practice. This is crucial for early years settings in supporting early identification and intervention for children with special educational needs and will be a useful contact for parents if they were to have any concerns about their child’s development.
Are you a new SENCO in your setting? Are you feeling overwhelmed trying to make sense of the role? This day will provide practitioners with information and knowledge about SEND. We will share practical strategies to support children with additional needs and to develop inclusive practice in your setting. We will help you to develop a whole team approach to supporting these children.
The role of the SENCO involves ensuring all practitioners in the setting understand their responsibilities to children with SEN and the setting’s approach to identifying and meeting the SEND Code of Practice. The role also includes:
· Advising and supporting colleagues
· Ensuring parents are closely involved throughout and that their insights inform action taken by the setting
· Liaising with professionals or agencies beyond the setting
· Ensuring a smooth onward transition and planning for moving on to school for pre-school children
Come along and we will support you in starting to develop your practice and taking the first steps in this crucial new role.

NO-SHOW POLICY
It is important to note that the majority of our early years courses are subject to a ‘no-show’ policy. Payments made for chargeable courses are non-refundable unless cancellation is received at least five working days prior to the start of the course. For centrally funded courses, if a delegate fails to attend, or fails to cancel at least five working days prior to the start of the course, the setting will be invoiced for a no-show charge – this charge will be £30 if the course is 3 hours or less, or £50 if the course is more than 3 hours.
By booking on to any course directly run by the Early Years Team there is an assumption that you accept the terms and conditions of the no-show policy.
This whole day training is for practitioners who have become new SENCOs, taking on this role since September 2019 and who have not previously attended any ‘Whole Team Approach’, ‘Targets and Outcomes’ or SEND group training delivered by the Early Years Team in the last 4 years.
