Learning outcomes
To gain a deeper understanding of loss, grief and bereavement; the feelings, responses and reactions that may be associated with it. To enhance understanding of the many different factors that can influence a person's grief response (for example: the age of the child/young person who died, an individual's relationship to the child/young person who died, the cause of death, other pressures on the family, the wider community). To consider how some understanding of grief and grief theory can enhance practices in the workplace and aid communication with bereaved families. To gain confidence in talking about the child and their death with families. To gain an understanding of how to enhance the care and support offered to all members of the grieving family when a child dies and when to refer to other support. To develop a small 'tool-kit' of ideas that may help grieving families. To consider the potential for vulnerability when working with issues of loss and grief, and the importance of self-awareness and establishing appropriate boundaries in this work. To recognise the importance of support for professionals and volunteers working with family bereavement. To gain information about Child Bereavement UK, other support organisations and the helpful resources available.
