Event description
This course is for anyone supporting adults with autism. A basic understanding of autism is required for this course. This one day course explores practical strategies to provide effective support to people with autism using the National Autistic Society's SPELL framework. SPELL is a framework for understanding and responding to the needs of people with autism developed through evidence based practice. The framework is useful in identifying underlying issues, reducing the disabling effects of the condition and providing a cornerstone for communication. SPELL stands for Structure, Positive approaches and expectations, Empathy, Low arousal, Links. This course looks at each element of the framework, with practical examples to illustrate each component: - Supporting people with autism through structure - Maintaining positive approaches and expectations - Developing empathy for individuals with autism - Adopting a low arousal approach - Creating and maintaining links between the individual, their wider support networks and the community. This course is delivered by The National Autistic Society, in line with the Skills for Care Knowledge Set 'Supporting people with ASC' and will be made up of tutor presentation, audio visual material, 'real life' example, discussion, group exercises and question and answer. You will be given a comprehensive set of notes. The standard charge for this course is £70 per day. Please refer to our Course Charges on the Home page for information on discounts and exemptions
